Like many wedding ceremonies in Mallorca, the heat pushes the ceremony time back into late afternoon. This makes for a very different vibe to most of the weddings I have played in the UK. The guests have usually spent the day relaxing and swimming, playing golf, enjoying the beach and exploring their surroundings before the wedding has even begun. And the ceremonies are very often outdoors too. These subtle differences really affect the atmosphere of wedding. And it’s my job as the musician to make sure I realise these differences and enhance them. Outdoor, later ceremonies tend to have a more chilled vibe than a more stiff, nervous indoor midday ceremony. In the UK I have never seen a drinks reception BEFORE the ceremony, but at Claire and Michael’s wedding I played at in Soller had just that.
I played piano and sang during the welcoming drinks reception while the guests meandered around taking in the stunning views of the truly breathtaking location of the venue of Cas Hereu Sa Figuera. It is a private finca in a valley that has an ampitheatre effect on the acoustics of the wedding music. My husband was waiting for me in the car parked much further up the valley and he said he could hear every note I played and sang!
The ceremony was beautiful under a pagoda of pink Bougainvilleas. And by pure coincidence the couple had decided to have Van Morrison’s ‘Sweet Thing’ as the bride’s entrance song which is exactly what I walked down the aisle to at my own wedding 5 years ago!
I then played acoustic guitar and sang through the drinks reception that followed after the ceremony before their meal. The acoustic guitar music provides a really nice outdoor vibe that suits the Mallorca wedding very well. Relaxed, classy and unobtrusive.
Their guests were so friendly and if you can believe it, one man there recognised me from when I used to play an Oyster and Piano Bar in Whitby 7 years ago! We had a great chat about Whitby and North Yorkshire and we just couldn’t believe what a coincidence and small world it is!

Thanks to Claire and Michael for choosing me for their wedding music in Mallorca.I leave you with a rendition of the Con Gas trio from a different gig over the winter where my dad is singing Van Morrison’s ‘Into The Mystic’ as Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks album was such a important part to Claire and Michael and indeed my own wedding day! Beautiful songs. Enjoy.
